Once upon a time in 2005, I watched three movies on a day. I can still remember the movies: Arindhum Ariyaamalum, Star Wars and Kanaa Kanden. What reminded me this was, I happened to watch four movies last week. Since none of them is worth a 200-word review, I thought it would be consoling enough to have atleast one paragraph per movie.
On the eve of Bogi, my mom, Seenu and I went to Villu. The movie had released the previous day. No wonder, the box office count for the second day included us and forty others in the theatre. Every movie-goer in TamilNadu is waiting for Mahesh Babu to give us a 300-day blockbuster hit, so that Vijay would beg for the remake rights and make it a 100-day hit in Tamil. Until then, we have to watch Kuruvi, Villu and whatever crap he acts. Since Mahesh Babu hits are not readily available and there are Surya, Dhanush, Vishal giving him a run for his money, Vijay has turned his head on MGR's blockbusters. Villu is a great story of a great son who takes revenge on the villains who demonised his father's service to the nation. There are his usual dancing numbers, Vadivelu claims to have done comedy and Nayanthara the typical dumb-headed Tamil heroine. Arena Multimedia or NIIT should come up with a movie generator (just like we have code generators) which, when given an MGR movie in DivX format as input, will create a new movie with Vijay as the hero, dancing numbers and gravity defying fights, all set in a different backdrop. This way, the budget of Vijay movies will come down drastically and producers will not end up going bankrupt. All the crew would need is two technicians, one director and some photo sessions with Vijay and a hot girl for heroine.
The next day, my mom, brother and I went to Padikkaathavan. Dhanush has no problem for another ten years. Unlike Vijay, he does not starve for storylines. All directors have one and only one storyline for him. He is unemployed. He doesn't obey his father. He falls in love with a heaven-forbid girl. He gets into a fight with a gangster's son or brother. The whole gang is after him throughout the movie. He is either unaware of the chase or outsmarts them everytime. He beats the villain in the climax. Five folk songs which include four duets. Done. You've seen a Dhanush movie. He uses his boy-next-door charm to his best advantage.
Kaadhalna summaa illa - I hear this is a remake. The heroine leaves the hero in an outburst of anger. The hero goes in search of her. A rich guy himself, in search of his beloved, learns some of the stark realities of the real world. In an otherwise slow drama, Ravi Krishna adds some colour with his witty dialogues. His dialogues are meant to be witty. The bike which the hero rides and Ennamo seidhaai nee song stand out.
On Sunday, I'd planned to spend some time with books - my evergreen friends. Chaithanya and Srinu dumped one load of sand on my plans. They took me to a Telugu commercial. Maska - a brave hero, two dumb-but-gorgeous girls, two villains, six songs, four fights. I've heard of Telugu movies. Thankfully, Maska did not disappoint me.
All in all, the week was a memorable one. Hail the movie-goer spirit.

4 movies in a week is a bit too much. If Villu itself wasn't enough assault on your senses you had to go see Paddikathavan. Which reminds me? Why are we glorifying people who are "Paddikathavans"? What will they celebrate next? Molamaris, Thirutu nayis, Mudichuavukis, Porumbookus? AACKH!!!!
