Non Conversations

Disclaimer: I stole the title from Love Story.  But took a different meaning.

The other day I lunched with a few colleagues.  The conversation turned to how native speakers of Tamil prefer speaking English in their conversations. One narrated a funny instance while the other listened.  Then the other started narrating an instance.  The conversation continued until we ran out of relevant instances.  I couldn't help but remember a dialogue from Fight Club.  Here is the extract from Wikiquote.

Narrator: When people think you're dying, they really, really listen to you, instead of just …
Marla Singer: … instead of just waiting for their turn to speak?
Narrator: Yeah. Yeah.

This is not a one-off thing.  This happens all the time and it happens everywhere.

Let me remind everyone.  The best gift you can give someone is, your attention.  Please try to make it a conversation by listening.  Sometimes, the best conversation happens, when you really listen, instead of waiting for your turn to speak.

Let's be conscious of the mistakes we make and set a good precedent for the future generations.
